Enabling Emergency Call

Top  Previous  Next

Descriptions

According to the GSM official terminology (GSM Recommendations 02.03 and 02.30), an emergency call is a mobile originating call to a nearby emergency call center (e.g. the police). Emergency calling is a teleservice derived from telephony, but it provides a simple and unified procedure to set up an emergency call. The emergency call will be connected at no charge.

GSM prescribes a standard emergency number (i.e. dialing 112) which is accepted throughout the world. In addition, the mobile equipment manufacturer can provide an SOS key which initiates this internationally accepted emergency number when pressed. The PLMN operator can install some abbreviated (emergency) numbers for certain country-dependent or area-dependent emergency service centers. Calls are then routed to a nearby service point, based on the cell-oriented routing feature.
