Descriptions
The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is a number unique to every GSM mobile phone. It is usually found printed on or underneath the phone's battery and can also be found by dialing the sequence *#06# into the phone.
The purpose of a mobile equipment's IMEI is to provide a means to identify, trace, track or deny service to the mobile station when it is used by a subscriber to access the network. When an event requiring an IMEI check occurs (e.g. MOC, location update), the MSC requests the IMEI from the mobile station. The events requiring an IMEI check can be administered within the MSC.
The Equipment Identity Register (EIR) is a function to identify valid IMEIs and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "ban" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, regardless of whether the phone's SIM is changed.
To enable IMEI checking, SCCP and VLR parameters need to be configured on NSS side.
